How We Legally and Ethically
Rescue Rabbits from Laboratories
At Save The Buns, Inc., we believe in compassion guided by integrity. Every rabbit we help is rescued legally and ethically, with full respect for existing laws, facility policies, and the safety of everyone involved.
Our common practice is to work directly with laboratories to coordinate the safe, lawful release of rabbits once their time in research/testing has ended. These collaborations ensure that each rabbit’s transition from the lab to a loving home happens responsibly and transparently.
There can be exceptions, however. Occasionally, laboratory animal caretakers reach out to us after adopting a rabbit(s) or while preparing to adopt one. In some labs, employees are allowed to adopt animals under contracts that prohibit rehoming them to others or to rescues.
When caretakers disclose this information, we carefully review the situation and require them to sign our Transfer of Ownership Agreement. This contract legally binds the individual to accept full responsibility for their actions, protecting both the rabbit(s) and our rescue from any potential repercussions.
To ensure safety and compliance, we do not accept any rabbit without official documentation showing the animal’s release from the laboratory. This verification safeguards against zoonotic risks and ensures no illegal removal or “liberation” has occurred.

Our mission remains the same: to give former lab rabbits the safe, happy lives they deserve — and to advocate for a future where compassion replaces animal testing.
From Lab To Leap
Welcome to our rabbit records, showcasing all the buns we’ve helped find homes after their first chapters in research laboratories. Each entry celebrates their journey from lab to sanctuary.
